It’s fair to say that Soto Voce aren’t afraid to make bold, often difficult choices. Not only did trans artist Kenny Soto grow up as a gender non-conformist boy in Oakland, but his musical partner Miguel De Vivo fled Pablo Escobar’s cartel in Columbia as a teenager. With two truly extraordinary backgrounds, it’s unsurprising that some of their past experiences would bleed in some way into their work as Soto Voce.
Their debut single ‘Better’ certainly doesn’t shy away from being idiosyncratic and a little outside of the box. Characterised by a downbeat, pulsating synth, the track takes its time to work up into a climax across the course of five minutes, eventually turning into a wall of electronic noise. Soto’s otherworldly vocals also help to build up the haunting atmosphere, adding another layer of anguish. With a video that also heavily references different forms of oppression, ‘Better’ is a hard-hitting introduction to Soto Voce’s work.
