Austin-based producer Roger Sellers – who works under the moniker of Bayonne – has just signed to City Slang and is due to release his debut album Primitives on 4th November. Working to make intricate electronic patterns that also has a distinctive groove, he’s been compared recently to the likes of Panda Bear, Caribou and even Toro Y Moi. However, his music also stands out for their rich, complex networks of sound, and Sellers’ own soft vocals. All of these elements will no doubt make an appearance on Primitives.
Bayonne’s distinctive sound is there for all to hear in single ‘Spectrolite.’ The accompanying video, directed by Lauren Gregory, is a DIY, partly stop-motion wonder that includes swirling lights, crude paintings and a blur of inventive ideas. There’s even the chance to venture into a mouth eating cereal and a cameo appearance from Alvin and the Chipmunks. Watch below.
Sellers talked about the revelation he had after buying a looper: “I found out that I could make these songs really spontaneously and have this really good idea without having to get into the studio to capture it right away. Most of these songs came out of me just fucking around, hooking up keyboards and experimenting.”
He continued: “I want the music to carry people in some way, and I want them to feel what I’m feeling. I want my music to be an emotive expression.”
