Perhaps the return of Craig David in recent times signalled something of a revival for the UK garage scene. A staple of the late ’90s and early ’00s, the infectious, distinctive beats on David’s work (and the likes of Artful Dodger and Shanks & Bigfoot), the sound seemed to die off when EDM became more prominent.
Australian duo Kllo are bringing the genre back, but before anyone thinks that this is a terrible idea, it actually makes perfect sense. On ‘Walls to Build,’ they have found a sweet spot between pretty synths, R&B and the clipped beats that defined UK garage. It’s comfortingly familiar – and very chilled out – but it also has a very contemporary, polished sheen. Kllo might be at the vanguard of a neo-garage revival.
‘Walls to Build’ comes from their EP Well Worn, out on 5th August via Different Recordings.
