Liverpool band SeaWitches recently returned with their double A-side ‘Tempest’ / ‘Skylight’ which was released on Emerald Eye Recordings. Tracked at Liverpool’s Parr St. Studios and produced by Bill Ryder-Jones, the two tracks are the band’s first full release since their debut single Stars was issued last year through The Label Recordings.
The rumbling ‘Tempest’ is the pick of the the two: a seven and a half minute epic with an oscillating beat, a rumbling bassline and Jamie Jenkin’s sinewy guitars setting the shadowy scene before swelling towards epic crescendos, it’s tension is redolent of early Echo and the Bunnymen. Lead singer Jo Herring’s anxious vocals cut rapier-like through existential despair to widescreen transcendental choruses; “The skies are burning” she sings as her voice shivers and swoops somewhere between Nico and Siouxsie Sioux. If you were initially a fan of Savages but let down by how they have progressed, SeaWitches could be just the band for you because ‘Tempest’ is moody, dramatic and quite honestly magnificent.
