This year, the Fat Possum label have really tapped into our sense of nostalgia. Earlier in the year, Day Wave released a mini-album chock full of blissed-out, lo-fi slacker pop and now Bloomington natives Hoops are doing much of the same with their upcoming self-titled EP. Is that a complaint? Of course, it isn’t.
The opening track of the EP, ‘Cool 2,’ may be less than two minutes long but in that time it crams in more sun-kissed goodness than a hot day in California. Its laid-back, reverb-laden vocals float over the jangly guitars and clashing cymbals; there’s even a touch of swooning melancholia lurking underneath its bubbly surface, though, giving ‘Cool 2’ a bit of extra bite. Fans of Real Estate take note: Hoops may be your new favourite band.
