Continuing a series of videos that included ‘The Wheel’ and ‘The Community of Hope,’ PJ Harvey has shared the video for her latest single from new album The Hope Six Demolition Project, ‘The Orange Monkey.’ Directed by photojournalist Seamus Murphy, the footage for the clip was shot in Afghanistan as the pair travelled through Kabul, Parwan, Nangarhar and Helmand provinces.
The resulting video juxtaposes the different extremes of everyday Afghan life. The country’s agriculture is on show throw a herd of goats crossing a river and the viewer takes a bus journey with an Afghan woman, while we also see children playing. On the other hand, the militarised nature of the country is captured by Murphy, as he shows drones, tanks and members of the army patrolling the landscape. However, Murphy also manages to bring out the very human stories of the country, particularly when a father carries his child on his shoulders. Watch below.
Harvey is making three live appearances in the UK this summer, at Field Day, Glastonbury and the Eden Sessions in June. Details below:
12th June – Field Day, London
26th June – Glastonbury
