I love a good mystery. The more something makes my brain work and frown, the more I seem to like it. Where crime fiction novels are concerned, I’m almost always wrong, but it’s fun to try anyway. And where musical mysteries are concerned, the mystery is almost never resolved resulting in a lot of swearing and, eventually, sighing as I unwillingly surrender.
The mystery that surrounds new band Fascinations Grand Chorus is one of the most baffling of late. They offer up damn near nothing about themselves – where they’re from, what they’re really about – nothing. The only teeny tiny snippets are that they’re made up of people going by the names of Stephanie and Andrew, that they describe themselves as “Two rival songwriters / One audio pop experiment”, and that they have just two singles under their belts, this one being their most recent. It smacks of 1960s vibes, all cool, ever-so-slightly twee, and pleading to be strutted out on the dance floor again and again.
‘Growing’ itself is chock-full of 1960s vibes – all cool, ever-so-slightly twee, and pleading to be strutted out on the dance floor again and again. Petula Clark and Lulu would be jealous of Stephanie’s vocals, and Duffy could well learn a thing or two. Whatever it is, it’s a fun, bubbly and likeable track that suits a sunny (or rainy) Tuesday such as this one, and any other day of the week.
