Trepanning is an ancient practise of drilling a hole in your skull to free evil spirits. In more recent times there have been reports of self-trepanation in order to achieve a higher state of consciousness. Just to put you in the right frame of mind, the press release calls the new Melt Yourself Down single “musical trepanning”.
Where Melt Yourself Down’s debut album was a tightly wound mix of electronic exotica, new single ‘The God of You’ is altogether more intense. The snake-hipped percussion focuses the furious duelling saxophones as singer Kushal Gaya chants “I’m your executioner,” and the whole thing threatens to overwhelm the listener like a shamanic ritual. It’s vaguely threatening while being irresistibly danceable and undeniably seductive. Their forthcoming album is called Last Evenings on Earth and this lead single certainly sums up the combination of celebration and menace that such a title suggests.
