When Vex’d, the dubstep/post-dubstep project of Roly Porter and Jamie Kinsdale (aka. Kuedo) ground to a halt the latter crystallised and perfected the urban blueprint they had created under the Vex’d moniker. The former has spiralled away from it to the point where his 2013 full-length, Lifecycle Of A Massive Star, was an entity almost entirely separated from the fields of dance and its many overlapping sub-genres, at times close to sheer noise and at times close to absolute silence.
‘4101’, the first offering from the upcoming album The Third Law, goes even further into uncharted territories, not just for himself but for music in general. There’s a similar atmosphere to the work of Ben Frost on his most recent opus A U R O R A but ‘4101’ is even more alien and foreboding. It is tempting to call it cinematic, but you would never find scenery apocalyptic nor nightmarish enough to be worthy of being sound-tracked by it.
