Last Thursday we attended the Welsh Music Prize, to witness Gwenno Saunders pick up this year’s Welsh Music Prize for her debut solo album Y Dydd Olaf. It was part of a strong short list of fifteen Welsh long players her Heavenly released record beat off the likes of Catfish and the Bottlemen, H Hawkline, Houdini Dax, Tender Prey, Zefur Wolves and Paper Aeroplanes. The trophy was awarded to Gwenno by Welsh Music Prize co-founder Huw Stephens at a ceremony held at Cardiff’s Sherman Theatre. We spoke to Huw got his views on the award that takes the temperature of Welsh music as well as sampled the atmosphere on Welsh Music’s biggest night of the year, watch our video here:
