Track Of The Day #757: I Am Super Ape – Monki feat. Mark Lanegan

8379c931e35a_144784403074_nyhedstor2I Am Super Ape are an intriguing Swedish based psychedelic pop group led by Italian Carlo Emme (Vocals, Guitar), his partner Swedish singer Moraea and drummer Viktor. For their intoxicating debut track ‘Monki’ their shape-shifting guitar sounds, swirling keyboard and stately percussion carve out a magical atmosphere somewhere between Mazzy Star and Fleetwood Mac.

‘Monki’ is laced with a twin assault on the senses, with Morea’s yearning vocals – ‘I know you want to be somebody else/ and you roll your dice’ – joined by the dulcet tones of the legendary Mark Lanegan (Queens Of The Stone Age, Screaming Trees). Lanegan’s involvement was inspired by Carlo’s dream about being in the Californian desert and listening to American singer’s Desert Sessions on heavy rotation. The song was produced by Damon Tutunjian (Mew, Swirlies), who has now also joined I Am Super Ape on bass, guitars, and synths.

Mark  Lanegan also appears in the video that precedes the release of the track, set for Nov 20th. In addition, the video features performances by residents of the collective that spawned I Am Super Ape, including their two rats, Du and Jag (Me and You) and Hampus Sundén, the singer of the only punk band on Kollektivet Records: Sista Bossen.

‘Monki’ b/w ‘Animals’ has now been pressed as a 7″ record, with a limited, initial run of 250 copies on gold vinyl for distribution in the UK and Germany (now available for pre-sale). 500 copies on silver vinyl will be available for purchase in January 2016.‘Monki’ is the first song extracted from I Am Super Ape’s debut album, currently slated for February 2016 release on Kollektivet Records.
