Greek duo Eleni Zafiriadou and Daniel Benjamin aka SEA + AIR have written a piece for us related to their new single ‘Follow Me Me Me or The Aborted Grexit,’ and how it relates to the recent possibility of Grexit, the no-vote in Greece and the pressure that EU austerity is subjecting the Greek people too. Read it here:
“Sorry for this shitty English, but the Greek sun and German banks sucking us in like a black hole, stole all our language skills. When we wrote this song we hadn’t heard the word Grexit yet.
Neither had Eleni’s grandmother when she told her husband to listen to the call of a ghost talking to her in her dreams. Telling her to follow him to Germany for a better future for their kids.
Can you imagine leaving everything behind, the language you speak, the speed you live in, the people you love and even force it all upon your family?
Like the Greeks invented democracy in another millenium, Eleni’ s grandmother invented the Grexit for her family. Pretty obvious we had to write this song for her.
What a coincidence that just before the release, we were hanging out in Greece, watching the so-called Grexit from the first row. People in Greece have been living between hope and fear for five years now. Of course they were shocked when the whole world started talking about the possibility of a Grexit, which was never in the minds of the Greeks.
Greece belongs to Europe. The no-vote was a reaction of the austerity policy. It was never meant to be understood as a position against Europe.
Greek people live in the present. As long as they stay healthy the future can come no matter what and they will figure something out.
So, after it was recorded and pressed Follow Me Me Me became an invitation to you all: Follow us us us down to Greece, spend your vacations there, do something good for your soul and a country with new, young leaders…”
SEA+AIR’s hauntingly emotive new single ‘Follow Me Me Me” which is out August 21st.
