Tom Williams is striking it out alone with a stripped back solo album entitled ‘New Guitar’ to celebrate we have been gifted a wonderful live version of his achingly poetic, wistful new song ‘1992.’ Recorded at the beautiful Plaxtol Church in Seven Oaks, watch it below.
Accompanied by Sarah Maycock‘s vocals and decorated by gorgeous pianos, guitars and Tom’s harmonica: a grandly understated combination that has something of a ring of Bruce Springsteen‘s solo sets about it. ‘I should have listened to my sister or my mother/this world has spat me out black and blue’ sings Tom, his story capturing the challenges of growing up, fighting for love and discovering creative release.
The video is lifted from, The Making-of “New Guitar” Mini Album Documentary directed by Jake Cunningham, giving a insight into Tom’s transition from band to solo artist, his relocation from Tunbridge Wells to St Leonards and the “New Guitar” bought from Replay Acoustics that ties all these songs together.
“Following the release of ‘Easy Fantastic’, his acclaimed third LP with The Boat on Moshi Moshi Records last year, Tom Williams is jumping ship to explore a stripped back solo venture called ‘New Guitar’, one that focuses entirely on the charming intensity of his lyrical songwriting and the minimal arrangements provided by a close circle of friends.
The mini-album features seven new songs written over the past two years that were put to tape at 2kHz Studios in Crouch End, London with Ian Grimble (The Fall, Manic Street Preachers, Siouxie And The Banshees).
The forthcoming release sees Tom accompanied by Ant Vicary from The Boat as well as Sarah Maycock, Fiona Keeler and Catherine Black on piano, vocals and cello respectively. It will be released on Tom’s own Wire Boat Recordings and has been available for pre-ordered along with host of exclusive offers via this Pledgemusic campaign, which was a huge success and well exceeded it’s original target.
An extensive tour of intimate venues around the UK will support the release including the ‘New Guitar’ launch night at The Lexington in London on March 23rd. Full list of dates below.
