Hailing from the grimey shores of the Clyde is Chrissy Barnacle, I was swept away by this, her exquisite contribution to Martha‘s recent mixtape of new music. ‘Nightride’ is framed by tumbling arpeggios and sighing strings, sewn with Chrissy’s couplets that depict her delightful lyrical dexterity, painting pictures of a night ride through town that brings indecision and heartache, her howl midway through is quite the most expressive punctuation point and release of frustration and pain, I have heard for a long time. This charmingly introspective work surfs somewhere between the raw intimacy of Kimya Dawson‘s solo work and Laura Stevenson‘s emotional poignancy. Writing about her own experiences growing up and sexuality, it shows a burgeoning artist whose song writing is bold, creative and frankly rather exciting.
It’s lifted from Chrissy’s frankly marvellous re-recorded “To Speak” EP. As she puts it “The EP is called “To Speak” as I realised only when re-recording these songs (oh hindsight!) that in fact they were all early attempts at speaking up and finding my voice – these songs are about self-discovery, sexuality and bravery.”
