When it comes to home-grown music, the magnitude of grime is unparalleled. If London is the epicentre, aftershocks can be felt nationwide – with even the West Country unable to escape the vibrations of the bass-fuelled genre thanks to grime’s latest offering.
Dorset’s Isaiah Dreads is steadily making a name for himself as one to watch. Industry tastemakers Zane Lowe, Annie Mac and Mista Jam already have the 17-year-old on their radar and it’s not hard to see why.
Winning the Glastonbury Emerging Talent Competition two years ago saw Isaiah perform at the legendary festival. Spots at Wireless and Isle of Wight festivals were also secured by the Dorchester based MC, whose mix of skippy flows, conscious lyrics and fun bars have propelled him into the spotlight.
What makes Isaiah so good is his love for grime and the culture surrounding it. “I just love grime. Grime is the only genre that I listen to and I just want to launch my laptop at the wall because I get so excited when I listen to it. I don’t get that with other genres,” he tells GIITTV.
Signed to Xenomania Records, Isaiah has dropped his rather humbly titled debut Nothin’ But A Mixtape. “This tape is a showcase of my love for grime and hip hop music but there’s also a lot of soul and alternative inspiration in there too. I don’t mind what I’m rapping on, really, just as long as I’m feeling it and there’s a good vibe to it,” he says.
With that attitude, there’s no reason Nothin’ But A Mixtape should be nothin’ but a success.
