Campaign to preserve The 12 Bar Club and Denmark Street

There’s still chance to add your name to the petition to protect the legendary 12 Bar Club on Denmark Street from demolition. The central London venue is a longstanding, key space for emerging musicians, and we can’t allow developers to change the face of Denmark Street. The street is synonymous with music – it’s famous for its run of music shops and hangouts – as well as the 12 Bar, it’s always been the place to go for rehearsing new bands, or anyone wanting to pin up a musicians wanted advert.

There is speculation about developers’ intentions for the area – but plans could include a new music venue under street level, and it could be at the cost of losing the 12 Bar Club, and there’s talk of building a corporate hotel and a Starbucks, changing the historical area forever. More shops might be moving into the area, and this could cost the existing independent businesses, with the fear of hiked rents.

We’ve already lost music venues like The Astoria, and Metro, in recent years, due to Crossrail development.

Music Heritage UK are still awaiting for plans to be submitted formally by developers, before they comment, but they support the petition to save the 12 Bar Club. Campaigners would like to see Tin Pan Alley granted special status, like Grade II listing, to protect it from development.

Punk bands The Membranes and Goldblade have just announced they are playing a special pre-Christmas gig, to highlight the plight. Let’s hope this isn’t one of the final gigs for the 12 Bar Club:
