Tinder, eh? Not since the Sixties has the concept of free love (read: casual sex) been so accessible. Or so I’ve been told. Still, the dangers of getting too liberal are there… and I’m not just talking about contracting an STD. Take the latest video for the ace new single from London-based electro duo, The Correspondents, ‘Give You Better’, which presents a cautionary tale about what can happen when you get too into this whole game of Smartphone hook-ups. It’s not your typical music vid, either: the scenes depicted are animated pencil drawings done by the band’s own Ian Bruce, who drew the characters, photographed them, erased them, redrew them and then photographed them, over and over again. Two thousand times, to be precise. It’s superbly done, with an attention to detail so sharp—especially on the facial expressions of the hapless young chap at the centre of this story—that the quality of the tune almost goes unnoticed. Almost.
Taking its cues from hip-hop and ragga-jungle, ‘Give You Better’ melds a multitude of styles and sub-genres into a neat n’ nifty three and a half minutes that demands repeated plays. The vocals—also provided by the talented Mr Bruce—bounce along a hugely danceable beat, courtesy of DJ Chucks, the origins of which lie in early drum n’ bass before the track segues into a chorus as catchy as the clap. The track is taken from their debut album, Puppet Loosely Strung, and enhances their reputation as an imaginatively unpigeonhole-able act.
