Acre Tarn are a duo whose music not only seems to transcend geographical location but also the earthly boundaries put in place by the laws of physics. Ambient it is, derivative it ain’t. And whilst a little over two months ago the band were enjoying relishing in relative anonymity, universal support from across the blogosphere has boosted their profile somewhat significantly, making it a sure-fire bet that as the band’s reputation grows, so to will their mystique dissipate.
Taken from their forthcoming debut EP Clasp and Shake, ‘Wishing Bone’ is built around shifting textures, subtle pulses and delicate melody. Like the previously released ‘This Once’ there’s a pervading undercurrent of darkness that permeates the heart of track, offset by impassioned layered vocals, the range of which is as impressive as the track itself.
With little chorus to speak of, ‘Wishing Bne’ is a track which feels more like an evolving sonic progression that ebbs and flows towards its conclusion, decorated with vocal harmonies and harpsichord. Lyrically there’s a sense of traditional prog at play too, entwined with a gothic romanticism that’s married perfectly with the foreboding instrumentation behind it.
As the release of Clasp and Shake draws nearer, the enigmatic air the band have encased themselves in looks set to shatter. And the timing couldn’t be more perfect. With their anonymity providing enough mystery to have people asking questions, ‘Wishbone’ is just one of Acre Tarn’s answers; ominous, impactive and ultimately just as stunning as their debut, it’s a track that you owe it to yourself to listen to.
