Fresh, passionate and raw, Mourning Birds are an offspring of punk trio that play deceptively straight forward songs with rock hit potential. Raucous garage with bluesy bass lines, mental beats and vocals that break out into primal howls.
Deceptive, because the songs, though chaotic (especially live) are underlaid with the energised simplicity meets crafted musicality that classic rock is made of. It is no surprise that comparisons to Nirvana, QOTSA and The Cribs have already cropped up.
New-music gurus of national and independent radio are liking what they hear and supporting the band, early doors. Mourning Birds debuted with download, ‘Oh Yeh!’, inviting listens and attention via their @MourningBirds twitter – they got more than they could have hoped for, plus a brace of new fans. A yellow double decker bus from their Medway home (full of friends, crew and madness) packed the London launch at the end of 2013.
By the start of this year, the band are starting to build their own audience in the capital, and getting offers from around the UK, to appear live.
Mourning Birds are about to unleash an awesome second single, ‘Eve Of The Isle’, recorded new year (again with Rhys Downing’s massive production). Totally enjoying being a rock’n’roll band, Sam Mitchell (drums n vocals), Bill Williams (bass guitar) and Jimmy Gilder (guitar n vocals) had a load of fun as saucy ladettes in the video.
Far from the “crowd went mild” of the nu-mainstream, this summer is set to glam up and rock on. Wildly. Mourning Birds are in the vanguard of these near future adventures…
