Kid Bakersfield is the solo project of singer songwriter Shawn Smith, a solo artist and a member of rock bands such as Satchel, Brad, Pigeonhed and All Hail The Crown along with collaborating with the likes of Greg Dulli, Happy Chichester and Arsenal along with influence from the legendary Andrew Wood and Mother Love Bone.
Released on 13th November 2013 on the Bandcamp site, Kid Bakersfield is a reminder of the fact Shawn Smith has been around the music scene for the past twenty years. A voice untouched which grows with every track and album he has been involved in.
Twelve tracks on Kid Bakersfield are a soulful tone moulded with gracious piano and guitar sound; this is what Shawn Smith has continued throughout his musical career.
‘Sound Of Your Touch’ creates a chill from his voice; reminiscent of ‘Philadelphia’ by Bruce Springsteen, the story flows with the sound. ‘Higher Places’, track five, is just over a minute long; the piano sound assists of having it in the moment.
‘Heaven Forbid’ proves how strong Shawn’s vocals are, the tenderness to this track is a standout, the melody is emotive, and the voice is untouchable.
‘I’m Gonna Sleep All Night’ is a different style, there’s a country undertone to it; the southern sound in his voice makes this a foot stomping romp.
‘Look Right Back at You’ proves that Shawn’s vocal style is second to none; he’s able to hold a note for the right amount of time which doesn’t ruin the song, when he does this it adds so much to the feel of the music.
There’s always something new that’s added to his repertoire, along with the piano stylings, the vocal range, the fact there isn’t anyone which has been around the same amount of time that can offer the service of musical passion like Shawn Smith, proof of his underrated talent in commercial areas.
The Kid from Bakersfield who currently resides in Seattle has a dark undertone of vocals down perfectly; Shawn Smith has again released another great solo album since 2008’s Diamond Hand.
