The opening track from Stubborn Heart’s self-titled début album – released last Guy Fawkes to a quiet explosion of ‘Album of the Month’ awards – ‘Penetrate’ is that record’s fourth single release. Unlike its title, ‘Penetrate’ does anything but that, preferring instead to slowly seep into your sub-consciousness through stealth and determination. As in its accompanying video, the music reveals itself as the soundtrack to a nocturnal car journey through the orange incandescence of desolate suburban streets. Luca Santucci’s voice drifts effortlessly over the song’s electronic heartbeat without ever threatening to move out of fourth, with its burbling sub-bass rhythm and the languid synthetic sweep of its melody creating a perfect atmosphere of pre-fabrication and emptiness. Echoes from the past possess ‘Penetrate’ with both the heart and soul of ghost-dubstep while translating this into the sound of what has now become the eternal present.
