The weather is turning, the leaves are turning brown and there’s the smell of Autumn in the air, so we are asking you which song reminds you of Autumn most? Nick Drake‘s dulcet tones on ‘The Riverman’, the warming melancholic strums of Kristin Hersh‘s ‘Your Ghost’ or maybe the glacial sound of the Manic Street Preachers widescreen anthem of the 90s like ‘Ready For Drowning’(“we love the winter/it brings us together)?Or maybe it’s a classic like The Mamas and The Papas ‘California Dreaming’ which has just been voted the nation’s favourite autumn tune.
The Mamas and the Papas 1965 classic has topped a poll of our favourite autumnal songs by shopping website SaleLand.co.uk.
“The song, which contrasted the miserable climate of a New England autumn and winter with sunny Los Angeles, was named as the number one seasonal song by more than a fifth of voters – 21%.
The Moody Blues version of Forever Autumn, from War of the Worlds, came next in the survey, picking up 18% of the votes.
A more traditional choice was Old Blue Eyes himself Frank Sinatra – whose September Song was the choice of 15% of voters.
Classic English rock band The Kinks were almost as popular – their Autumn Almanac won 14% of support.
Green Day’s autumnal anthem Wake Me Up When September Ends, came next with a solid 12% of the vote.
Disco classic Earth Wind and Fire’s September won six per cent of the vote to be named in sixth place in the poll.
Scottish rocker Paulo Nutini’s song Autumn was a favourite for five per cent of those polled, making it the seventh most popular autumn song.
The late Eva Cassidy’s song Autumn Leaves was chosen by four per cent of those polled, just ahead of The Small Faces with The Autumn Stone and The White Stripes with Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground.”
