A host of gigs will reel, (see what we did there?) onto the streets and even a Cathedral this August as a festival brings a Mercury Music Prize nominee and a host of other artists into a city.

Following the massive success of a gig by the Futureheads in Durham Cathedral last year, The Durham Streets Summer Festival is kicking off this years event with an extended programme of folk artists, sitting alongside a whole host of international street performers who’ll be taking over the city.

The stunning setting of Durham Cathedral will provide the stage for a gig by the twice Mercury Music Prize nominated Eliza Carthy on the 21st of August whereas the ‘Folk in the Gardens’ shows will take place throughout month at the 13th century Crook Hall and Gardens near the centre of Durham.

Eliza’s 1998 ‘Red Rice’ and 2003’s ‘Anglicana’ were both up for the prize and Eliza is also the winner of more than five BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, and been on the judging panel for the Q Awards and the Ivor Novello Awards. In 2003 Eliza became the first English traditional musician to be nominated for a BBC Radio 3 Award for World Music. Championed by the likes of John Peel and Billy Bragg from an early age, in 2001 Eliza played the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury leading Michael Eavis to claim he discovered her.

Support comes from Jim Moray. Jim has been nominated in three categories for the current BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards for Best Album, Best Traditional Track (for Lord Douglas), and Folk Singer Of The Year.

The ‘Folk in the Garden’ afternoon shows include Joe Hammill, guitarist and singer with the highly-acclaimed Teessiders ‘Cattle and Cane’, Rachel Newton, culminate with Jenn Butterworth and Laura-Beth Salter on Sunday 25 Durham Streets Summer Festival finale weekend.
