Topping a first impression isn’t always easy but Londoner Katie Malco shows real bravery on the follow up to the release of her first EP in 2011.Laying it all bare with an affecting piano and vocal composition: ‘Ventricles’ that’s brittle refrains ride a series of contradictions: Katie’s quivering vocals are at once wounded yet angelic, whilst the melody is almost pretty and hymn-like yet heart stopping painful. Ventricles is marvelously haunting and hopefully a portents of more to come from Katie with the release of the Tearing Ventricles 12” EP on September 30th via Alcopop….What’s more it’s FREE download it here:
Katie says; “Over the year I lived in Brixton, I wrote an EP’s worth of songs on the piano, each song marking a different turn in the year – endings and beginnings. I decided to go into the studio and record everything live. Producer Jamie Field (Tubelord, Tall Ships) and I went to my old University in Kingston where there’s a huge live room and a Steinway grand piano. We went in, mic’d up, I sat down and played the songs live in full takes. In around 12 hours I had completely exhausted myself and also recorded an EP – Tearing Ventricles.”
