Harper Simon has premiered the music video for the hazy golden fuzz pop of “Bonnie Brae”, the first single off his sophomore album Division Street, on his YouTube channel. Simon headed to Oklahoma City to work with director George Salisbury (Flaming Lips) to tell the story of Bonnie Brae, from the golden moment of their meeting to her mysterious disappearance – as if it was all a dream.Watch it below:
Out on March 26th in the US and April 1st in the Rest Of The World 2013, Division Street explores new sonic territories for Harper, giving his acoustic guitar a rest so he can showcase his electric guitar talents. He cites his musical influences growing up in New York as Little Richard, the Kinks, Big Star, Hank Williams, the Pixies, Television, Muddy Waters, T Rex, the Who and X.
Simon co-produced Division Street with Tom Rothrock, who produced three albums for Elliott Smith (Either/Or, XO and Figure 8) and Beck’s first album Mellow Gold, among others. As the team worked, the album’s sound grew rougher around the edges. “I felt challenged and inspired by the idea of making a modern psychedelic folk-rock album,” says Simon. “Elliott Smith was very influenced by the Beatles but my guitar playing is more influenced by Keith Richards. And I kept wanting to emphasize more lo-fi elements.”
In anticipation for the album release, Harper Simon will hold a residency at The Satellite in Los Angeles for their “Free Mondays” series. Simon will showcase his new songs and also curate special guests to perform in the series. Please see the full dates below.
