Track Of The Day #132: Lupen Crook – Treasons to be Beautiful

Lupen Crook British Folk Tales

The first single from Lupen Crook’s first album (‘British Folk Tales’) in five years is a cracking folk-punk anthem entitled ‘Treasons To Be Beautiful’.That sways queasily through clattering drums, strums, and lurching brass, like the meeting point between the urgent narratives of Nick Cave and the playful wordplay of Ian Drury.

Lupen’s intricate couplets scratch earnestly for truth and hope among the chaos and rubble of 2012: with politicians taking the piss, hipsters playing the game, and a crumbling welfare state. A plea to take a stand against apathy and a system where those at the bottom scramble for the scraps from the privileged table: (“….are you not living off the crumbs that the big dicks leave?”). It’s political, yet personal, intense yet heartfelt and a fucking kick in the nuts as we kick off a week where our esteemed politicians stand from pulpits and lie about the state of the country and scapegoat all of us plebs in the process! Thus it’s our song of the day watch the wonderful animated accompaniment below!
