I’ve never quite understood the ‘hardcore’ end of the punk spectrum. There has never been anything about this kind of music that naturally appeals to me. The strong scene and subculture that surrounds this genre has also deterred me from inspiring any form of interest towards it (why on Earth would you want a rose tattooed on the front of your neck?!). This is the part where Eagulls swoop in and bridge our differences.
The progressive punks hailing from Leeds have collated an equal amount of influence from Black Flag and The Replacements (apparently – these names mean little to me) in one corner as a well as Sebedoh and Sonic Youth (OK – now you’re talking my language!) in the other.
The forthcoming EP provides a scuzzy lo-fi production and slack approach throughout with shouty vocals riddled with punk spirit. ‘Coffin’ delivers a rugged and direct injection of catchy rock and roll whereas ‘Moulting’ features a prominent Bernard Butler-esque guitar line and a compromising sense of 90’s nostalgia. My personal highlight of the release comes from the closer, ‘Still Born’, where the vocals and guitar seem to noticeably take it in turns to flourish at different sections of the song and shift the listener’s attention accordingly.
Eagulls’ EP will be released on the July 16th, on either transparent green 12” vinyl (with digital download code) or via digital download through SexBeat.
