Now onto its third year, Deer Shed Festival in North Yorkshire takes place over July 20th to 22nd. The organisers claim with some justification that it’s got “the vibe of a lazy Sunday afternoon in the perfect pub beer garden, sound-tracked by a bill that resembles the 6 Music playlist”, and it’s got to be said that it was the line-up that drew our attention. The big names are Saint Etienne, Villagers, Cherry Ghost, Los Campesinos!, Beth Jeans Houghton & The Hooves of Destiny, Dutch Uncles, and in what seems like something of a coup, School Of Seven Bells no less. Keep going down the list though, and there’s the likes of Laki Mera and Rae Morris. Oh, and did we mention The Staves?
There is what you might expect these days in terms of arts and other activities, and intriguingly ‘real monsters’. I’ll look forward to that then. They are also capitalising on their North Yorkshire-ness by roping in the National Media Museum, who will be screening the silent classic Nosferatu accompanied live by Darius Battiwalla on piano. OK, I’m a wuss at horror films, but that is both my all time favourite, and even in a world of 3D CGI, it remains one of the scariest. Not content with one museum, they’ve also got Eureka! The National Children’s Museum involved in this monster business.
I must admit though that we will be there for what snagged our attention in the first place, namely the slightly terrific line-up.
Tickets are a very non-scary £69 via www.deershedfestival.com
