The Apple Cart Festival takes place on Sunday 3rd June 2012 at Victoria Park, Grove Road, London E3. They’ve just announced some of the first musical and theatre names for the event including Billy Bragg, Jeffrey Lewis & The Junkyard, Kid Creole and the Coconuts, Marcus Foster, Marques Toliver, Martin Creed, Neneh Cherry, Noah and the Whale.
Meanwhile at the Penguin Café Sean Rowley (DJ set), Shaun Keaveny (DJ set), The Soul Jazz Records Sound System, Stornoway.
In terms of comedy they’ve got Seann Walsh, Josh Widdicombe, Josie Long, Shappi Khorsandi, Charlie Baker, and Suzi Ruffell.

The Apple Cart – London’s unique day festival for lovers of music, comedy, cabaret, interactive art and magic – is pleased to announce its initial line up for 2012. Returning to Victoria Park in East London on Sunday 3rd June with an imaginative bill that encompasses art, magic and cabaret alongside music and comedy, the first acts serve as a taster for what’s to come, with lots more idiosyncratic talent and innovative activities to be announced in the coming weeks.
After a hugely successful first year last summer, The Apple Cart (from the people behind Field Day and Underage festivals) is set cement its reputation as a colourful festival of ideas that caters to adults and children alike. Adopting something of a melting pot ethos, The Apple Cart presents London with an entirely fresh, multi-disciplinary take on the festival experience: no other event in the capital has Turner prize winners and world class magicians and burlesque stars sit happily alongside arena-filling comedians and established music legends all on the same bill, on the same day.
Due to the London 2012 Olympics, The Apple Cart will take place, over the Diamond Jubilee June Bank Holiday weekend at the earlier date of Sunday 3rd June (the day after Field Day).
Among the first acts confirmed on the music line up is Noah and the Whale: having reinvented themselves (again) with a hugely successful, homespun take on 1980s American AOR rock, on their third album, ‘Last Night On Earth’, the band cemented their status as one of this country’s biggest and most popular bands on last year’s festival circuit.
England’s foremost political folk/punk stalwart, Billy Bragg, will come armed to The Apple Cart with as many activist causes and thought-provoking drives to action as anthemic, arms aloft hits; also confirmed is purveyor of comic books and anti-folk narratives, Jeffrey Lewis, who will be accompanied by his band The Junkyard to create their archetypal self-deprecating, distortion-fueled garage rock sound.
Bringing the party will be the inimitable, Kid Creole and the Coconuts, and rap, soul and pop icon, Neneh Cherry, whose continued influence on the current female fronted UK music scene shines brightly. Meanwhile musician and Turner prize winner Martin Creed promises to intrigue the Apple Cart audiences with weird songs of love and hate from his forthcoming album.
Playful subversions of musical structures and genres will be expertly handled by, Penguin Café; while Oxfordshire four-piece, Stornoway and London newcomer, Marcus Foster, will ensure dreamy pastoral folk and blues will be well catered for. Trained in the Suzuki method, songsmith Marques Toliver is known for his ability to seamlessly blend soul, R&B, gospel and classical influences and will doubtless be weaving all these sounds and more together for his performance.
DJ sets are being left in the expert hands of Sean Rowley of Guilty Pleasures – check out his excellent BBC Radio Kent show – and BBC 6 Music’s Shaun Keaveny; while The Soul Jazz Records Soundsystem (the DJ arm of Soul Jazz Records) will be injecting a healthy dose of reggae, Latin, Brazilian, jazz and general sunshine vibes to the festival.
From music onto comedy: once again The Apple Cart is proud to present a plethora of heavyweight comedy talent, including Brighton’s charismatic motor-mouth and Mock The Week and 8 out 10 Cats panellist, Seann Walsh, the witty Edinburgh Comedy Awards Best Newcomer nominee Josh Widdicombe and multi-talented comic Charlie Baker who’s stint on BBC’s Lets Dance For Comic Relief saw him become a house hold name for tapping his way to victory. A welcome addition to the Apple Cart line up is host of ladies wot laugh, including loveable Oxford graduate and 6 music radio host Josie Long, sharp-tongued Shappi Khorsandi who has appeared on the prestigious Live At The Apollo and Channel 4’s Comedy Gala and exciting newcomer Suzi Ruffell who was named the Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year in 2011.
Also confirmed for 2012 is the fabulous Art Car Boot Fair which will once again be breaking out of its Brick Lane car park and heading to Victoria Park to create a bespoke fete-in-festival where punters will be pick up an astonishing selection of exciting art works and art wares, all from the boots of classic cars. Elsewhere on site will be artist Gavin Turk’s ‘Candlelit Matinee – The House of Fairy Tales Film Theatre’. For the second year running, The Apple Cart will play host to ‘The House of Fairy Tales’ project, which will see the magic of the silver screen come to the heart of Victoria Park by inviting the young audience to learn about all aspects of film making – from script writing, story-building, set building, costume, special effects. All taking place under one tent in a single day. There’s even a chance for the audience to create and star in their very own films.
In addition to all of the above, The Apple Cart is very proud to host a stage curated by members of the renowned magicians club The Magic Circle, who will provide a host of otherworldly entertainment and magic for kids and adults. As with last year, The Apple Cart is thrilled to present the most sought after and forward thinking magicians around.
