With last year’s ‘Decay Decoy’ debut album, Norway’s The Megaphonic Thrift began to pay back the stream of compliments that had been thrown their way since a critically lauded appearance at 2010’s By:Larm. Having been formed from members of Casiokids and The Low Frequency In Stereo, the quartet already had musical previous but the debut album delivered a white knuckle feedback drenched ride that saw the likes of Clash wax lyrical over its ‘hypnotic textures, sprawling noise and violent haze with blistering riffs’.
Now The Megaphonic Thrift return with their second, eponymous album. Entering their rehearsal space in Bergen with only a handful of riffs and a desire to experiment, the tracks that make up the album came about through a process of all members writing towards a unified record, disregarding any template and looking to move on from the marker set down by ‘Decay Decoy’. The result is an album that pushes at the edges of their previous noise assault at times but also reveals a softer and more delicate side to the band’s songwriting. Or, as bass player Linn Frokedal puts it:
‘It is spontaneous and schizophrenic because of how we wrote the songs. There were no rules so the diversity of the songs came naturally. It is lighter but also darker at times than ‘Decay Decoy’. In a way it is like a mirror for what has inspired us since that album was recorded.’
