Hundreds explores all the strangeness and humanity that makes the world spin and the pulsing fairytale that is “Wait For My Racoon” feels like we’re in the forest of Eva’s duplicating dream with a playful, almost warped cabaret mood reminiscent of a Disney animation: “While I walk deep into the woods, I see some shimmering lights / And there underneath the moss, are working dwarves.”

The magical, surreal video, written and directed by Ellen Stein, proves the perfect complement and enhancement to the track:

On Tuesday December 13th Hundreds play their first ever UK headline show with Eva playing autoharp and glockenspiel alongside Philipp’s piano and synth, with a stunning backdrop of geometric visuals behind the duo.

Hundreds will be performing songs of exquisitely nuanced beauty from their self-titled début album, songs which suggest varying degrees of altered states, but ones which never lose sight of the intricate interplay between Philipp’s keyboards and Eva’s wistful vocal.

Hundreds’ sound has been subtly influenced by Eva’s love of trip-hop, from Portishead to Moloko and Lamb, though the Milners have none of those bands’ full-on dynamic. Their gentler brand of intoxication leans toward the stark, elegant and quiet, where the spaces between the sounds are as important as that which creates them. They are more kindred spirits to the restlessness and heartache of The xx, Hundreds’ German peers The Notwist and Denmark’s When Saints Go Machine.

The duo began writing and recording in spring 2008, fitting together pieces “like a jigsaw puzzle; and in the end, we turned out a big picture.” The first evidence was a three-track EP. The lead track “Solace” was a magically mysterious ballad where Eva sang to “a fictitious person, maybe a child that could use some solace, or a friend of mine.” The song also opens the album, “because we want to open up with compassion and love. Anyone knows that feeling…”

Hundreds want to tour everywhere they can, during which times songs will surely keep taking on new forms, with new experiences likely to inform the next album, which the duo are about to start writing and recording. If dreams can become real, then 2012 will be Hundreds’ year.
