Miss Black America were always a flawed proposition. Bursting out of a genuinely pleasant Suffolk market town, Bury St Edmunds, in late 1999, formed by friends barely out of school, fronted by an eyeliner-slathered, loudmouthed, bilious lunatic, powered along on a wave of nascent musicality and genuine, fresh-out-of-school gung-ho enthusiasm, the band lit up the toilet venues of local “day-trip towns” Ipswich and Cambridge long before John Peel, quite unexpectedly, started playing their records on Radio One in May 2001.
It was a rocky road fraught with obstacles. With ‘God Bless Miss Black America’; all 5 singles released from the album (‘Human Punk’, ‘Don’t Speak My Mind’, ‘Infinite Chinese Box’, ‘Talk Hard’ and ‘Miss Black America’) appeared in John Peel’s 2001 and 2002 Festive Fiftys, with ‘Talk Hard’ (also a Virgin Drivetime Single of the Week) coming in at #3 in 2002.
Three years later ‘Terminal’ comes along and is much more confident, unabashedly rock album. Much of ‘God Bless…’ had seen Seymour frantic with scattershot rage and equal-opportunity bitterness at everything that had ever irritated him. ‘Terminal’ was the sound of a man trying to put his whole life in perspective; self-abuse, friends lost to mental illness, addiction and suicide and his own broken marriage are laid bare in an often astonishingly candid, but never histrionic, fashion and in May 2006 it all ended.
They will also be releasing a free 3-track single (containing ‘Talk Hard’, ‘Freefall’ and the original demo recording of ‘Miss Black America’) limited to the first 1,000 downloads only.
We also had a neat line in good/terrible ultra-cheap videos too, and here are the 3 which are on
