Remembering John Peel

inthetvbigHappy John Peel day!The legendary broadcaster John Peel passed away on this day seven years ago today. His laconic style was comforting and wise. His unquenchable thirst for new music was admirable and his eclectic playlists were constantly challenging. His sessions were often must listens from the regulars like P J Harvey, Billy Bragg and The Fall to introductions to the likes of Arab Strap, The Beta band and Broadcast. Always a source of inspiration for everyone here at GIITTV, his legacy can still be heard in shows on 6music but sadly rarely at his old home of R1.

Which songs and artists did John turn you on to?!

  1. This is a bit old, and it is almost eight years now – but I was surprised no-one posted a reply to this, so thought I would. I don’t remember any specific artists the great Mr Peel turned me on to, think I was a bit young at the time and wasn’t serious enough about following up the things I heard (or able to, not having money to buy stuff), but I do remember hearing a very strange piano piece done by one of those automatic punched sheet reading pianos… was extremely quick and complex – very accomplished by whoever had created it, but a bit hard to listen to to be honest! But I do generally remember enjoying everything I heard him play on his graveyard slot on R1 (on my Sony Dreamcube radio alarm, which I still have today), and miss him about so many places. The world still needs him I think!
