The tour follows the recent release of their fourth album Tickled Pink (It Are Good Records) on 12″ vinyl with distribution through forward thinking electronic label Illegal Art (home of Girl Talk, Steinski, and Junk Culture). Much like Darren himself, its incredibly explicit front cover is not one for subtlety. He is currently in the middle of a ten month world tour which doubles up as Darren Keen’s honeymoon after recently marrying his long-term partner Lacey.
Darren has spent the last nine years recording as The Show Is The Rainbow fusing a bizzare mix of funk, hip-hop, dance and experimental electronic music, combined with a multimedia presentation and lots of quick witted banter. He has played just under 1,000 shows to date, including 30+ tours of the United States, 9 European tours, and 2 tours of New Zealand.
Pulling influences from Frank Zappa, Beck, Squarepusher, and Captain Beefheart, he has built up a following, and turned what was once sort of a “novelty” act, into a full fledged, DIY, underground movement. People have compared him to a midwestern, musical Andy Kaufman, with the ability to light up any room with hilarious, original, and confusing behavior.
