MATTHEW HERBERT
Performs World Premier of ‘One Pig’
Friday 2nd September : The Royal Opera House
Deloitte Ignite Festival, Curated by Mike Figgis
Matthew Herbert will perform the world premiere of his ‘One Pig’ live project on 2nd September at London’s Royal Opera House, as part of ROH2’s Deloitte Ignite 2011 Festival, curated by director Mike Figgis.
The festival, entitled Just Tell the Truth by Figgis, will bring together an extraordinary collection of artists from diverse disciplines to examine our society and its representation.
In addition to music from the album, Herbert’s performance will feature a brand new musical sampling instrument and a chef cooking live on stage.
The festival will also feature an exhibition of evidence and objects accumulated during the making of ‘One Pig’, including a unique musical instrument made by Henry Dagg, pig fat candles and a pig trotter candelabra.
The performance will offer a preview of Herbert’s ‘One Pig’ album, due for release in October 10th 2011 on Accidental Records. ‘One Pig’ tells the story of a single farm animal from birth to death and beyond. It is an elegy to an otherwise-anonymous farm animal’s life and raises startling questions about humanity’s complex and contradictory relationship with these often-maligned and misunderstood creatures.
The album has already aroused some controversy, with PETA condemning the project as cruelty for “entertainment”, a charge which Herbert has roundly rejected.
