There’s a certain Tarantino-esque rockabilly sound to title track Korea, wonderfully grimy production on these two demo tracks from , lead singer James Cox’s voice is a wobbly Jon Spencer Blues Explosion growl, dancing around the sleazy guitars, moody bass and splashy drumming. It’s a lively and trashy surf rocker, followed by the tasty blunt riffage of Reyes, with the drums swaggering elegantly alongside the bassline, whilst Cox’s voice trembles like Nick Cave on a vibrating platform. It’s got a cocky melody with the lyrics spat out in a semi-comprehensible drawl, certain words teasingly popping out of the mix.
This is a great couple of tracks where the ragged production benefits the musical style brilliantly, there seem to be a fair few bluesy bands coming out of the London scene at present, and Crows have – on the evidence of these two tracks – enough energy and verve to stand out from the crowd.
