Ever shifting, and ever probing the texturous sonic depths, California based recondite sound conjurer, Matthew David composes a searing abstract white-noise soundtrack to L.A – the city he left his deep southern roots for.
Imbued with the very best qualities found in the experimental work of techno and ambient masters, Richard James and Air Liquide; ‘Outmind’ grinds, compacts and spits out a static-charge of oscilating signels and warped blanketed melodic overtures. Though the riding theme is awash with crunching bass and magnatic swelling storm activity, most of the tracks betray an humanistic touch, with displays of intemittent evesdropping on cross-radio transmissions, and waves of Tibetian percussive wonderment.
A few of David’s fellow out-there artists join him on this enterprise. These guest appearences and collaborations include Dogbite, who adds a lost voice to the foggy, vibrating clockwork tune International; the cLOUDDEAD-esque drift and postulations of Cali electronic producer and artist Flying Lotus , on the Eno voyuer, Group Tea; and the intervening haunted bubbling trance atmopsherics of Niki Randa on Floor Music.
You could call this record a modern anthropolgy collage or survey; David’s electronic suite crackling with the busy and ever-changing vibe of the city.
An album that only makes sense when listened to in its entirety, Outmind is an unrelenting tide of static and noise, crafted with enough melodies to keep up an intrest.
