Austin psych-gaze girl-duo and best friends Boy Friend release the Lovedropper EP on 7” orange vinyl this week through Italian record label Hell, Yes! Accompanying it is a day-glo video of extraordinary proportions – quite literally. Unlike most landscape videos, Boy Friend decided to mess with your minds and blog layouts by making theirs the other way up.
Forged in the freakishly cold winter of 2010, Boy Friend began when Christa Palazzolo and Sarah Brown hunkered down in Christa’s Austin, Texas, bedroom to record their debut EP. Fueled by Lone Star, Disney movies, and – most importantly – jokes, their creative partnership is marked by a casual, natural approach that reflects a lifelong friendship and history of musical collaboration, most recently as two-thirds of Sleep∞Over.
Their ease with one another doesn’t preclude the tendency to fight and make up, however, and an emotional tension runs through the music like cheese through a stuffed pizza crust. Boy Friend’s song-writing is minimalist, but their presentation is richly layered and lush, emphasizing stacked vocal harmony, guitar ambiance, and thick, atmospheric rhythmic backdrops.
Also released today on Hell, Yes! is EMA’s intensely dark cover of horror punk Danzig’s hit Soul on Fire, out on limited edition 7” vinyl. With queues down the road for both her planned sets at The Great Escape this weekend, another late set was added to the schedule last minute due to popular demand, surely making her the toast of the festival!
