Following on from the success of their second EP, Vessels & Veins, Linlithgow boys Ben Proudlock (guitar and vox), Fraser Sanaghan (guitar), Gavin Cormack (bass) and Kieran McGuickan (drums) a.k.a Penguins Kill Polar Bears, are back with a brand new single, Sapling. The aforementioned EP, and subsequent UK tour, has already made 2011 a successful year for the boys.
Sapling sees Penguins Kill Polar Bears slow down their tempo to allow Ben’s distinct vocals to dominate the first half of the song. The tune then explodes into a symphony of distortion during the bridge, before gracefully settling back down into a gentle groove.
B-side, “Geiger” provides a bass heavy electro groove contrast to the title track, with ethereal guitars creating a mournful ambience that sweeps over the listener. It’s a departure from the band’s usual wall-of-sound assault of guitars and drums, and only goes to show that they are more than willing to develop and experiment with their already popular signature sound.
