Described on her Wikipedia page as merely “a Canadian folk singer-songwriter known for performing with an autoharp,” Basia Bulat has certainly gone all out to ensure such stifling categorisations are chewed up, spat out and steadfastly refuted on the towering work of art that is her 2016 album release, Good Advice‘.
Whilst there is still a bubbling undercurrent of her folk leanings here and there, it is clearly evident from the 10 tracks on offer here – produced, perhaps tellingly, by My Morning Jacket‘s impeccable frontman Jim James – that Bulat is equally at home with gargantuan three-and-a-half-minute pop songs. Her tunes are resolutely infectious and brimming with charisma, this particular selection employing a Supremes-like drum beat, a latter day Fleetwood Mac style melody and a perfectly delivered vocal that elevates her status from “one to watch” to “one to cherish” from this moment on.
Basia Bulat’s album ‘No Good Advice’ is out now on Secret City records.
