Lately, it seems that the best bands are duos or trios. Perhaps this is due to an overload of information or technology. Everything needs to be simplified and stripped down of all the excess. Maybe all these cassettes I’ve been listening to is a way to reach back to when there was a time where bands could home record and grow without blowing up on the internet overnight and disappearing in the blink of an eye.
Femignome are from Kennesaw, Georgia, which is about as far away from the hype machine as you can imagine. This scrappy duo records at home, dubs their own tapes, prints their own shirts and merch, books their own shows, and isn’t out there trying really to be found. They just play shows around Georgia having fun. ‘Mermaid’ is soaked in echo tank garage tone, with longing vocals that sound like Wanda Jackson fronting Thee Headcoatees. I love how the drums drop a beat more than once, but who am I to say that it is wrong? Maybe it’s perfect time.
