There are some occasions when even on paper the concept alone of a band makes you think ‘That’s such a good idea! Why didn’t I think of that?’ And so it proves with Brighton quintet Written In Waters.
The band are fronted by the ultra-magnetic vocalist Beth Cannon, who has also lent her voice to Nordic Giants, Calico and the Giorgio Armani campaign. ‘…And The Things We Bury’ actually manages to live up to the description in the press release of the band being ‘like the bludgeoned lovechild of Kate Bush and Sigur Rós.’ (Ethereal and dramatic, the greatest ever female vocalist fronting a band who mix shoegazing and post-rock – why didn’t I think of that?!)
Of course, a band is more than just the vocalist, and the four other members George McKenzie (Guitar, Programming), Lawrence Jenner (Bass), Joe Habberfield (Keyboards), Bill Burns (Drums) all play their part in producing a song that is at times sublime, at others chilling but never less than enchanting. Over the course of its six-minute run, it makes for a rewarding listen, and the video suggests this would be a great act to see live. Hell, on this evidence, I’ll even forgive the appearance of a man bun…
